A photodiode is a semiconductor formed with a PN junction that is sensitive to the arrival of visible or infrared light. For correct operation, it is reverse polarized that when excited by light a certain current flow will be produced.
If enough voltage is applied to the ends of the IR LED, it will emit an infrared light that can be detected by the photodiode, which puts it in the current voltage circulating state and thus uses the current flow and variation. The most common are to detect the movement or approach of an external object, or to block the infrared light that the photodiode receives; this can be converted into information for certain operations.
